The Recorder is one of the world's oldest instruments that dates as far back as the 14th Century! The recorder is part of the woodwind family as it requires you to blow a stream of air through the mouth piece in order to make the sound. Traditionally recorders they were made out of wood or animal bones. In some parts of the world recorders made out of human bones have also been found! Today recorders are usually made out of plastic, resin or wood.
In modern recorders the sound is created by a thin membrane inside of the mouthpiece vibrating due to air being blown against it. Some recorders rely on the player to blow air into the instrument and for the air to vibrate past the finger holes to create the sound. To blow into a recorder you must blow slowly and gently, as if you were whispering into someone's ear. That is why some people call the recorder the 'Whispering Instrument'. If you blow too hard into the mouth piece the recorder will make a high pitch squeaking noise that tends to give people headaches and ends up making you a very unpopular musician.
In this section you will be able to find more information about the recorder, the different parts of a recorder and also get to see photos and videos of different types of recorders.
